The women's equestrian team began their 2008-2009 season with their annual Blue vs. Orange scrimmage, held at the Ned R. McWherter Agricultural Pavilion on Saturday.
"We are using this scrimmage opportunity to give our freshmen the chance to get comfortable with our format prior to the start of our regular season," said UTM head coach Meghan Cunningham, who will enter her third year in charge in the equestrian program. "We have an outstanding group of athletes and we look for wonderful things from their talent this year."
Despite beginning just their third year of existence, the UTM equestrian program has reached new heights in regards to success on every level. The team has competed in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships their first two years, which only invites 12 schools per year.
Cunningham will look for contributions from all nine returning riders this season, with Stephanie Sanders and Kendra Leake leading the western side and Phebe Brennan and Michelle Thompson leading the English side. Ten newcomers will also compete for the Skyhawks this year, led by the most talented freshman class in program history.
UTM opens their season on Friday, Oct. 24, when they will face Southern Methodist for a hunter seat competition at 3 p.m.
