Simpson said that the demands of football can be difficult on families, but he tries to alleviate the stress for his family and his assistant coaches by allowing family members to get involved.
"Here in our community, it really is a blessing, compared to other places because we live three or four minutes away [from UTM]. My kids and wife are in the football building and at practice often," Simpson said.
"Those are things that at some places I've worked head coaches did not allow. We encourage it here, and you'll see our coaches' wives and babies at practice. We do spend a lot of time in practice, but we'll never get these years back."
Simpson has high standards and expectations for the rest of the season.
When asked what he will do when the team wins the OVC Championship this season, Simpson said that the team will keep looking forward to bigger and better games.
"When we win, we'll get ready for the playoffs the next week. That's what is so neat about this profession: whether you win or lose, there is a perpetual cycle."
"We're always thinking about how can we improve," Simpson said, "whether it be facilities or budgets. You know winning a conference championship would be awesome, but we talk about national championships here. It's going to take a tremendous effort and tremendous work to get there."
Coach Simpson and the Skyhawks will return to play Thursday at 6 p.m. in an OVC showdown with Eastern Illinois.
