UTM basketball coach Bret Campbell resigned June 5 after coming under fire for financial decisions he made during his summer basketball camps.

"Questions arose regarding decisions I made concerning the operation of the summer basketball camps on campus. I understand the concerns over mistakes that were made," Campbell said in a press release.

"These are strictly related to the summer camps and have nothing to do with the NCAA or any of our current or former players," he said.

The Pacer obtained a copy of an audit conducted by a Memphis-based firm which read: "An independent auditor performing a review at a local high school notified the university that an individual had cashed a client's check made payable to UTM. As notified in the report, Mr. Campbell said he cashed this an other checks, totaling $21,145, to pay camp officials and purchase camp meals and drinks."

The audit suggested that Campbell repay $2,937.68 for camp assessments and in payroll taxes associated with "income not processed properly and deposited in his personal bank account."

Other discrepancies mentioned in the audit was Campbell's agreement with Anaconda Sports.

"(Campbell) also entered into an agreement with one of UT's sporting equipment vendors, Anaconda Sports, for which he receives annual payments, merchandise credit, and other benefits."

"The coach stated that he has recieved $4,000 from the company over the past four years. He said he signed a three-year agreement with Anaconda Sports, which originated in 2005," according to the audit.

Assistant coach Jason James will take over as head basketball coach for the Skyhawks.

He has been an assistant with the program for the last seven years.

"I am pleased that Jason is willing to accept the appointment as our next coach, and I know that he a (Jay) Bowen will move the program forward," UTM Athletic Director Phil Dane said in the press release.

This is a sad excuse to push an excellent man to resign. I doubt that this coach ever intended to do anything under-handed, illegal or otherwise. He is a fine, upstanding, Christian man; a wonderful mentor to not only his basketball players but to many others in the community and at his church. (Continued…)

Ok look, the amount "missing" was not pocketed by him. I know Coach Campbell on a personal level as well as a profesional level. He is a great Christian man as GEB said. (Continued…)

Great jod AD Dane on firing (yeah, he "resigned") a coach right after the program's most successful year!!

Yet another instance of this AD caring more about money and budgets than actually delveloping and growing athletics at UTM!

Until Dane is fired the athletics (as a collective) at UTM will continue to be a joke. (Continued…)

Look at the whole picture best coach on campus gets the
ax and just down the street (baseball) sits a team starving for some coaching. How long is Phil Dane going to let this go on. (Continued…)
