The Skyhawk field house was rocked Thursday night by the sounds and movements of the UTM Dance Ensemble. The ensemble's fall showcase was titled "Distorted Emotion," a title most appropriate for students on campus.

Sarah McCormick, Dance Director, spoke on the correlation between "Distorted Emotion" and student life.

"I think it's the students who have these emotions that go on in their lives; that they have this feeling of uneasiness in college and they're still trying to figure things out while they're growing up. They still have these feelings and a lot of the pieces tend to be emotional, and so we called it "Distorted Emotion", as if they're puppets on a string in life," McCormick said.

After the choreographers opened the show, the ensemble opened with "Stay…My Love" which was choreographed by Will Rasmussen and set to John Mayer's "Dreaming with a Broken Heart."

The ensemble featured five pieces in the first half prior to intermission, with all pieces in the show choreographed by members of the company or by Sarah McCormick.

An enthusiastic audience carried the performance into an intermission, when the second half began with a much more "down and dirty" tone.

"7X7" opened the second half, and was choreographed by Shari Jno-Finn. Set to "Bad Girl" (by Britney Spears feat. Lil Wayne), the piece excited the crowd and really seemed to let the dancers have fun.

"7X7" was followed by my favorite of the show, "Hurried Life." Representative of everyday life, "Hurried Life" seemed to sum up "Distorted Emotion" best. With the entire company on the floor, the dance ensemble was able to convey a broad range of everyday happenings flowing from one activity to another with the ups and downs in life.

The massive amount of choreography also conveyed the "herd mentality" of everyday people just going through the motions of life.

The Dance Ensemble has been working on this particular performance all semester, and the personal dedication and hours involved require the most passionate of individuals.

"Most of these choreographers are in my choreography class, so we work on tools of the trade. It takes a lot of hours. Not only the 4-6 Tuesday Thursday class, but almost everyone here has outside hours, meaning they work Monday through Friday, sometimes Saturday to get the work done," said McCormick.
